22: Carnival Legend and Cape Spear (10/7)

We got up early on a cold, rainy Monday morning in order to watch the season's last cruise ship, Carnival's Legend, enter St. John's harbor for the day.

For awhile, it was just us and a cadre of street sweepers, plus the local news channel.

After the ship docked, we drove halfway up Signal Hill and were rewarded with numerous rainbows appearing and disappearing all over town.

Today was trash day.  Because of seagulls, everyone has to cover their trash bags with special weighted nets, or at least a sheet or similar.

Our rental house for this week.

Took a drive to nearby Cape Spear, the easternmost point in all North America and site of an historic lighthouse and WWII US/Canadian guns and military post.  The site was dedicated by Charles and Diana on their 1983 visit.

Eastern-most North American point!

So different, weather-wise, from downtown St. John's, the park was again a VERY windy spot and cold.  Gift shop staff mentioned the entire National Historic Site had been closed the previous Friday, the windy day we experienced outside the GEO Center, when sustained winds were 85km (50 mph) and higher.  I believe it!

But we braved the elements to walk a short portion of the East Coast Trail and see all the sites in the park.  We were two of perhaps 50 other people we saw there; Canadians sure are a hardy hiking lot.

St. John's harbor entrance, where the cruise ship entered, to the left, Quidi Vidi Lake entrance to the right.

Start/End of the spectacular and extraordinarily maintained East Coast Trail.

The working lighthouse is left of center, the historic one with lightkeeper's home to the right on hilltop. In spite of it being offseason, the interpretive center, home tours, and restrooms were all open.

I just like these pants, downtown St. J's shop window.

At 3:40, we heard the ship's horn, so we watched it depart first from downtown, then we drive again up Signal Hill.

We decided to go to the top once it was through the Narrows, and lest you think we were the only ones.....

...there was an absolute traffic jam of boat-watchers just like us!  Above, btw, you can see Cape Spear, where we were earlier, to the right.  It's near, but it took us almost half an hour to drive there.

I finally got my rose cake from Rocket, a belated birthday treat!  Dinner was at home, eating leftovers we love, like the local lamb sausage.
