17: Moose Day! (9/30)

Monday morning we decamped Gros Morne for a 400+ mile day of driving to St. John's. Originally we weren't going all the way over to St. John's because of the distance and because the summer ferry had already ended its run, but we heard so much good about it that we changed our plans.

Our morning began with our first moose!  A BIG bull sauntered across the road before we'd even left the park!  You can gauge his size when comparing him to the guardrail.

And then…a bonus!  We saw people parked along the highway at midday, so of course we looked, and there was a cow and calf.  The photo doesn’t do justice – they were so beautiful in the sun.  They were also shy, and disappeared just after we pulled over.

See the tip-top point right of center in this photo?  That's where we hiked to yesterday!

Traveling across Newfoundland was just one spectacular geologic feature/beautiful lake/rushing rocky brook after another.   This “rock” really is a geologist’s paradise.

And then there are the signs you just can't ignore.  This was in a McDonald's in Grand Falls-Windsor.
