4: Coastal Maine to Moncton New Brunswick

It was a day with a LOT of car time.  Distance to Bay of Fundy National Park from Belfast was only 300 miles, but it was stunningly foggy for a good part of it, slowing us down and depriving us of much of the coastal scenery and early autumn colors we knew were out there.  And once we finally arrived at the national park campground, again it was cool, foggy, wet, and thunderstorms threatened, so we headed for Moncton, more than an hour away, pricelining a Holiday Inn, disappointingly.  There were thunderstorms overnight, something we were told was quite unusual for this area.

The day’s foodie highlight definitely was brunch in the tiny Maine town of Amherst (on the cashier’s sweatshirt: “What happens in Amherst stays in Amherst….but nothing ever happens.”).  Looks can be deceiving.  The best multi-berry muffins to be had were baked there that morning and made a fine introduction to a true home-made breakfast in a wood-paneled small-lunch-counter kind of roadside place.

Oh!  Canada!
